Can a website be done to the glory of God? I certainly hope so because the Apostle Paul says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Part of our “whatever you do” has been to build a website. And thanks to the expert work of my son-in-law Jarrett Cesmat, I believe we’ve done it.
The vision for the website was first communicated to Jarrett in the parking lot of Polly Freeze, a Southern Indiana staple, on a perfect summer night for ice cream in early June. I remember saying things like, “I want the peace and beauty of Christ to somehow be translated to a website, can you do that?” “Can we build a website that is God-centered?” “What if we had a website that helped people slow down and contemplate the deep things of God?” “How can our website capture the essence of Providence Baptist Church?” Jarrett listened intently, taking many mental notes even as he asked excellent clarifying questions. A website was born.
Of course, no digital space can capture perfectly the gospel of Jesus Christ. But that fact is no excuse to not make every effort to use technology for the glory of God.
In this introduction to our website I’ve risked overstating what we’ve done. After all, it’s just a website; the church is not digital pages, but an assembly of the redeemed, striving by grace to live corem Deo (‘before the face of God’ or ‘in the presence of God’) in this generation. And yet, in our day, a website in many ways serves as a church’s “front door”—it’s our first impression to the world. Therefore, we want to say as clearly and compelling as we can with our digital space who we are.
With that, welcome to our new website.
